St Andrews School, Tonga
In 1998 the new Principal of St Andrews, an ex Wanganui Collegiate teacher, may have had just a little to do with bringing the declining state of the school to the attention of the Rotary Club of Wanganui North. Rising to the rather considerable challenge, for a group of its size, the club embarked upon an intensive two year programme of fund raising and voluntary labour to renovate the school.
The Rotary Club of Nuku'alofa helped in getting a Rotary International grant which was used to bolster the other funds raised and enabled a team of ten NZ Rotarians to go to Tonga. In Nuku'alofa they laboured over 10 days replacing roofs, doors and windows to bring St Andrews School back to a fit state.
